Trench Safety: Protecting Workers From the Hazards Below Ground

 

Trenching and excavation work is essential across construction, utility, pipeline and infrastructure projects—but working below ground can expose crews to serious hazards.

The risks can be deadly. By June 28, 2025, OSHA reported 11 trench-related fatalities in the U.S. that year—a sobering reminder of why proper planning, protective systems and training are so important when working in and around excavations.

Cave-ins are among the most recognized dangers, but they aren’t the only concern. Falls, falling materials, hazardous atmospheres, water accumulation and mobile equipment operating near an excavation can all create risks on the jobsite.

Creating a safer trenching operation starts well before anyone enters the excavation. It requires planning, proper protective systems, appropriate equipment and a commitment to recognizing changing jobsite conditions.

 

Understand the Hazards Before Work Begins

 

No two excavation sites are exactly alike. Soil conditions, trench depth, weather, nearby structures, underground utilities and the equipment being used can all affect the work.

Before anyone enters an excavation, the site should be evaluated by a competent person as required by applicable OSHA standards. Inspections should continue throughout the work, particularly when changing conditions could introduce new hazards. Crews should remain alert for hazardous atmospheres, water accumulation, changing soil conditions and other conditions that could make the excavation unsafe.

Rainfall, vibration from equipment, changing soil conditions and other jobsite activity can quickly alter conditions.

 

Use the Right Protective System

 

Depending on the excavation and site conditions, workers may need protection through sloping, benching, shoring or shielding.

Trench boxes and other protective systems are designed to help protect workers from cave-ins, while shoring systems help support the sides of an excavation. The appropriate solution depends on factors such as soil classification, trench depth and site conditions.

Protective systems should always be selected and used in accordance with applicable OSHA requirements and manufacturer instructions.

 

Keep Loads and Equipment Away From the Edge

 

Spoil piles, materials and heavy equipment positioned too close to an excavation can create additional hazards.

The weight of equipment can affect the stability of the trench walls, while loose soil, tools and materials near the edge can fall into the excavation.

OSHA requires excavated or other materials and equipment that could pose a hazard to employees to be kept at least two feet from the edge of an excavation or retained using devices sufficient to prevent them from falling or rolling into the excavation.

 

Provide Safe Access and Egress

 

Workers need a safe way to enter and exit trenches.

For trenches four feet or deeper, OSHA requires a stairway, ladder, ramp or other safe means of egress so workers do not have to travel more than 25 feet laterally to reach one.

Access points should remain clear and properly positioned throughout the work.

 

Don’t Overlook Fall Protection and Retrieval

 

Trenching projects can also involve work around exposed edges, confined areas and locations where fall protection or retrieval equipment may be needed.

Depending on the application, equipment may include:

  • Full-body harnesses
  • Self-retracting lifelines
  • Anchorage and connecting devices
  • Rescue and retrieval systems
  • Tripods and davit systems

 

Selecting the right equipment requires understanding the specific work environment, potential hazards and applicable regulations.

 

Inspect Equipment Before It Goes to Work

 

Equipment used in and around excavation sites takes a beating.

Dirt, moisture, chemicals, abrasion and heavy use can affect everything from lifting equipment to fall protection systems. Equipment should be inspected as required, and damaged or questionable gear should be removed from service according to applicable standards and manufacturer requirements.

A strong inspection program can help identify problems before equipment reaches the jobsite—or before a damaged component becomes a larger safety concern.

 

Make Training Part of the Safety Plan

 

Even with the right protective systems and equipment in place, workers need to understand the hazards associated with trenching and excavation work—and how to recognize conditions that could put a crew at risk.

Trench and excavation safety training can help workers better understand common excavation hazards, protective systems, safe work practices and the importance of ongoing jobsite evaluation. Training also helps reinforce the role every employee plays in identifying hazards and maintaining a safer work environment.

Because conditions can change throughout a project, having knowledgeable workers on site is an important part of a comprehensive trench and excavation safety program.
