The A-B-C-D’s of Fall Protection
Understanding the Basics of Working at Height
Falls remain one of the leading causes of serious injuries and fatalities on construction sites and in industrial workplaces. Whether you’re working on a rooftop, climbing a communications tower, performing maintenance in a manufacturing plant, or loading equipment at height, proper fall protection can make the difference between a routine workday and a life-changing accident.
Fortunately, understanding fall protection doesn’t have to be complicated. One of the easiest ways to remember the essentials is through the A-B-C-D’s of Fall Protection.
These three components form the foundation of a personal fall arrest system and work together to help protect workers when a fall occurs.
A is for Anchorage
The secure tie-off point or anchorage connector.
Everything starts with a secure anchorage point.
An anchorage is the structure or point to which a fall protection system is attached. Without a properly designed and installed anchorage, even the best harness and lanyard cannot provide adequate protection.
Anchorage points should:
- Be capable of supporting the required loads specified by OSHA and ANSI standards
- Be positioned to minimize swing fall hazards
- Be compatible with the connecting devices being used
- Be inspected before use
Depending on the application, anchorage solutions may include:
- Permanent roof anchors
- Structural steel beam anchors
- Concrete anchors
- Horizontal lifeline systems
- Portable anchor devices
Choosing the correct anchorage is one of the most critical decisions in any fall protection program.
B is for Body Support
The full-body harness that distributes fall forces.
The body support component is the full-body harness worn by the worker.
Modern full-body harnesses are designed to distribute fall forces across the thighs, shoulders, chest, and pelvis—areas that can better withstand the forces generated during a fall.
A properly fitted harness should:
- Fit snugly without restricting movement
- Be adjusted before each use
- Position the dorsal D-ring between the shoulder blades
- Show no signs of wear, cuts, fraying, or damaged hardware
Workers should inspect their harness before every use and remove any damaged equipment from service immediately.
Comfort also matters. Workers are more likely to wear their fall protection correctly when harnesses are properly sized and designed for all-day use.
C is for Connectors
The lanyards, lifelines, or carabiners linking the harness to the anchor.
Connectors link the worker’s harness to the anchorage point.
This category includes:
- Shock-absorbing lanyards
- Self-retracting lifelines (SRLs)
- Positioning lanyards
- Vertical lifelines
- Rope grabs
The right connector depends on the specific application, available fall clearance, worker mobility, and jobsite conditions.
For example:
- Shock-absorbing lanyards are commonly used when adequate fall clearance is available.
- Self-retracting lifelines (SRLs) can significantly reduce free-fall distance and are often preferred where lower clearance exists.
- Specialized connectors may be needed for leading-edge work, confined spaces, or tower climbing
Using the wrong connector can increase fall distance or create additional hazards, making proper equipment selection essential.
D is for Descent, Rescue and Retrieval
The equipment and planning required to safely lower, retrieve, or rescue a worker who has fallen and is suspended in a harness.
Stopping a fall is only part of the equation. Once a fall has been arrested, a worker must be rescued as quickly and safely as possible.
Without a rescue plan, a suspended worker faces the risk of suspension trauma (orthostatic intolerance), a potentially life-threatening condition that can develop when a person remains suspended in a harness for an extended period. This is why OSHA and ANSI emphasize that employers must have procedures in place to promptly rescue a fallen worker or ensure they can rescue themselves.
A comprehensive rescue strategy should include:
- A written rescue plan specific to the jobsite
- Proper descent and rescue equipment
- Workers trained on rescue procedures
- Regular practice drills to ensure teams are prepared
- Equipment inspections to verify rescue devices are ready when needed
Rescue planning should never be an afterthought. Every job involving work at height should answer an important question before work begins:
“If someone falls today, how will we get them back to safety?”
The A-B-C-D’s Work Together
A personal fall arrest system is only effective when all four components work as a complete system.
Think of it like a chain:
- A strong anchorage with a damaged harness still fails.
- A quality harness connected to an inadequate anchor still fails.
- The wrong lanyard or connector can compromise the entire system.
Each piece must be compatible, properly inspected, and used according to manufacturer instructions and applicable safety standards.
Beyond the A-B-C-D’s
While the A-B-C-D’s provide a simple way to understand the basics, an effective fall protection program includes much more:
- Hazard assessments
- Proper equipment selection
- Worker training
- Equipment inspections
- Rescue planning
- Ongoing program reviews
Fall protection is not simply about wearing a harness—it’s about creating a complete system that protects workers before, during, and after a fall.
