Facts about Fall Protection
- A lanyard will stretch 3.5′ to slow a fall.
- The shorter the tie-off, the shorter the fall.
- Always use the shortest lanyard possible.
- Always attempt to tie-off directly above your head to avoid the pendulum effect.
- Look out for sharp beams. Wrapping lanyards around beams could cut them so instead use a cross arm strap.
- Do not punch holes in harnesses to increase size.
- Attach lanyards to back d-ring only.
- Side and Front d-rings are for positioning only.
- Never tie a knot in a lanyard. It will reduce the strength by 50%.
- Never engage a snap hook directly to webbing, rope, wire rope, two or more to one d-ring, or to another snap hook.

Wire Rope Products
Durable Solutions for Rigging, Lifting, and Industrial Applications
United Rigging offers a comprehensive range of wire ropes tailored to various industrial needs, including bright steel, galvanized, stainless steel, and aircraft-grade wire ropes. Our wire ropes come in multiple classifications and strand constructions such as 6×19, 6×25, and 6×36, providing options optimized for strength, flexibility, and resistance to abrasion.
Types of Wire Rope
1. Bright Steel Wire Rope
Manufactured from high-strength carbon steel, bright steel wire ropes have a smooth, uncoated surface offering excellent tensile strength and resistance to twisting under load. Commonly used in overhead cranes, elevators, and winching applications where internal environments are controlled and corrosion is minimal.
2. Galvanized Wire Rope
Galvanized wire rope is coated with zinc to resist rust and corrosion, making it ideal for outdoor and industrial environments exposed to moisture. Widely used in construction, marine, suspension bridges, and utility applications, it balances strength and weather resistance at a cost-effective price.
3. Stainless Steel Wire Rope
Known for superior corrosion resistance, stainless steel wire ropes are perfect for harsh environments such as marine, food processing, and chemical industries. They feature long lifespans and low maintenance but come at a higher initial cost. Grades 304 and 316 stainless steel are common, with 316 offering enhanced corrosion resistance.
4. Aircraft Grade Wire Rope
Specialized for aviation and high-performance industrial applications, aircraft-grade wire ropes comply with stringent standards to ensure reliability, safety, and precision in critical load-bearing use.
Wire Rope Construction and Classifications
Wire ropes are classified by their strand and wire configuration, which influences strength and flexibility:
- 6×19 Construction: Six strands with 19 wires each offer good resistance to abrasion and moderate flexibility. Common for general-purpose rigging.
- 6×25 Construction: More wires per strand provide better flexibility and fatigue resistance with slightly reduced abrasion resistance.
- 6×36 Construction: High wire count per strand for maximum flexibility and fatigue resistance, ideal for complex rigging tasks and repeated bending.
The core type also varies: fiber cores provide flexibility while independent wire rope cores (IWRC) enhance strength and crush resistance.
Applications
Wire ropes from United Rigging serve a wide range of industries including manufacturing, maritime, construction, mining, and transportation. Typical uses include:
- Hoisting and lifting with cranes and winches
- Load securing and rigging in shipping and offshore operations
- Structural support and guy wires for towers and bridges
- Industrial machinery and tool control cables
Maintenance and Safety
Regular inspection and maintenance of wire ropes are essential for safe operation. Look for visible signs of corrosion, broken wires, kinks, or abrasion. Proper lubrication and storage extend service life. United Rigging provides expert guidance on wire rope selection and maintenance to ensure compliance with safety standards like OSHA and industry regulations.
